One thousand miles west of the Atlantic Ocean, just off the Amazon River, the village of Boca de Valeria provides some insight into life on this great river. Visiting cruise ships have had an impact on Boca de Valeria for good and ill. Children and adults dress in indigenous dress although the population of a couple hundred is largely mestizo. Twenty minutes north of Boca on a small tributary is the larger village of Santa Rosa de Valeria, which boasts a new school complete with library, computer lab, kitchen, and four classrooms. The trip upriver, in small boats no more than 5m. in length and powered by an outboard motor with an extended shaft that allows navigation through shallow water without entangling the wheel in river grass.
